Surroundings
At the foot of Mount Erice, the fishing village
of Bonagia stretches on the homonymous gulf and
facing the imposing Mount Cofano.
It was and it is an old tuna station and in the
period between May and June you can have the
privilege to celebrate the old rite of the
“mattanza” or tuna slaughter.
The hamlet, ideal place where to relax, is
conveniently located to allow you to visit the most
interesting places in the neighbourhood .
In Sicily myth is interwoven with history and
archeology and bear witness to ancient populations
and cultures.
In the extreme west point of Sicily, where the
Phoenicians sailed and Ulisses lived his adventures
among salt pans, tunna stations, isles and corals,
the province of Trapani offers its heritage of
nature, history, archeology and myth. Especially
during the Holy week, Trapani offers the unique
Misteri procession. An event which joins together
history and tradition, faith and popular religion.
An event you can't miss.
“Agro Ericino”: a wide valley dominated by the top
of the Mount. It's like a gate leading to unspoilt
scenery where the land and the sea are intertwined
with steep walls on lovely caves and old hamlets,
among the past and the present providing alluring
views to visitors. Here were set the old towns of
the Elimians. Erice and Segesta, which you can still
admire in their beauty
At Marsala Lo Stagnone among the beauty of the
salt-pans,and in the warm and not very deep waters,
you can observe a variety of migratory birds such as
wild ducks, herons and in spring an incredible
flashing bloom decorating the emerging stretches of
land. Here is Mothya, the isle-town Punic stronghold,
one of the most important Phoenician settlements in
the Mediterranean.
The Egadi islands are there, facing the Trapani
harbour, at easy reach. You can discover them from
Trapani city centre, from Nubia salt-pans, from
Mothya, from the top of Erice.
You can get there in a very short time but there you
will be far from everything, surrounded by unspoilt
nature and rare beauty.
Another spectacular site in the core of the
Mediterranean is San Vito Lo Capo, a seaside resort
endowed with a fine sandy beach and crystalline
water. After leaving the village, in the south-east
direction, you get the Zingaro, one of the most
spectacular nature reserve in Sicily. |
